THE SPIDER WHISPERER

Overview

This short documentary was made out of a passion for telling people’s stories.

I met Luh Sukarmi many years ago (in 2016) and didn’t dare to go to her place knowing she had thousands of spiders around the house. However, my curiosity as a filmmaker took over the fear I had of those creatures and decided to explore this unique story.

The short documentary was selected for the prestigious Balinale, the Bali International Film Festival, and is also available on the Waterbear streaming platform. Watch it here: https://www.waterbear.com/watch/the-spider-whisperer

Bali International Film Festival

This experience was not just an opportunity to showcase my work but also a journey of immersion into the vibrant world of international cinema.

Participating in the festival allowed me to connect with fellow filmmakers, industry professionals, and a diverse audience, enriching my perspective on storytelling and cinematic artistry. The event provided a platform to exchange ideas, share our unique narrative, and celebrate the collective passion for storytelling.

Social media

These short Reels were carefully designed to capture the essence of our short documentary, offering a sneak peek into the intriguing world of Luh Sukarmi and her spiders on social media.

Filming process

The filming process unfolded over an immersive 2-days experience.

On the first day in the morning, we interviewed Luh Sukarmi to dig into her story with the spiders and to get to know her. Later on, we captured footage of the creatures at her place. In the evening, we made sure to translate the whole interview from Balinese/Indonesian into English, making sure we knew what to film the next day to piece together a great story.

On day two, we focused on getting all the shots we needed to tell the story the best way possible, including the drone shots.

It was challenging to film this project since I'm very scared of spiders. But I knew I had to tell this story, so I stepped out of my comfort zone and just went for it.
