THE STORY OF WAYAN LABA
Overview
Embarking on a journey to Bondalem village in Bali, Indonesia, I discovered the extraordinary story of Wayan Laba, an ardent farmer preserving the age-old tradition of crafting Arak liquor and sugar.
Intrigued by the resilience and dedication of individuals like Wayan in maintaining cultural practices, I felt compelled to share his inspiring narrative.
This documentary is a tribute to the unsung heroes who, against the backdrop of Bali's lush landscapes, carry on traditions that define the essence of their communities.
Filming process
The making of this documentary unfolded in two immersive days.
The first day involved an in-depth interview with Wayan and capturing crucial B-roll footage of his daily life. In the evening, I dedicated time to translating his Balinese insights into English with a local translator, ensuring the authentic transmission of his experiences.
On the second day, the journey began at the break of dawn, scaling palm trees with Wayan to document the intricate process of collecting "tuak" (palm wine). This early morning venture provided a firsthand glimpse into the challenges and dedication required for this age-old craft.
Social media
To offer a sneak peek into Wayan Laba's captivating world, I've crafted short reels showcasing poignant moments from the documentary. Each reel provides a glimpse into the arduous climb, the delicate extraction of "tuak," and the heartfelt reflections of a life dedicated to the art of Arak and sugar production.
